Server racks typically measure 42 units in height (1U = 1.75”), with widths of 19” or 23” and depths from 36” to 48”. They typically weigh around 350 lbs and come in various forms like open-frame, enclosed, wall-mount, or portable racks. 

Rack and stack services are essential for handling server racks properly during a move. Server units vary by form factor (1U, 2U, blade, tower), weighing 30–40 lbs, with storage configurations, network interfaces, and mounting hardware.

Packing and Moving Servers & Server Units:

Proper packing and handling are critical for protecting your servers during the move. Start by conducting an inventory and labeling all components, whether it’s IT equipment moving or computer equipment moving. 

Back up your data, power down systems, and document cable connections (photos help). 

Server movers will ensure your servers are wrapped in anti-static and bubble wrap, then placed in sturdy triple wall cardboard carton containers. When requested we can offer custom wood crates with shock absorbers.

For moving server racks, it may be necessary to empty, pad, or disassemble them, and cables must be bundled and labeled separately. 

Use shock-absorbent packaging to ensure safety. Moving servers and server racks requires specialized equipment and trained professionals to handle the IT equipment relocation properly.

A centralized project management approach ensures that all phases of your server move go smoothly. This includes assessing the scope, budget, and site conditions, and creating a clear timeline with milestones. 

Detailed communication protocols, including photo documentation, GPS tracking, truck seals and crisis plans, will keep you informed throughout the relocation.

For accurate quotes, an RFP should include a detailed scope of work, inventory list, site details, timeline, technical requirements, and insurance expectations.
